The Best Masonry Paints for Irish Weather in 2025

Not all masonry paints are built for the Irish climate. A professional exterior painter in Carrickmacross reviews the best masonry paints available in Ireland and which perform best in wet, exposed conditions.

Masonry paint is not a generic product. The range available in Irish builders’ merchants and hardware shops varies enormously in quality, durability, and suitability for the conditions we actually face here — high rainfall, persistent humidity, and the relentless cycle of wet and dry that Ireland’s Atlantic climate delivers year-round.

As a professional exterior painter working across Carrickmacross and Co. Monaghan, I’ve used most of the major products on the market. Here’s an honest review.

What to Look For in a Masonry Paint for Ireland

Before the product recommendations, it’s worth understanding what makes a masonry paint suitable for Irish conditions:

High water resistance. An obvious one, but not all products are equal. Look for products specifically described as “smooth masonry” rather than economy grades.

Breathability. Masonry needs to be able to release moisture from within. A non-breathable paint traps moisture inside the wall, which leads to bubbling, peeling, and ultimately damp issues. All quality masonry paints are breathable to some degree — cheap products less so.

UV resistance. Irish summers aren’t intense, but UV still causes fading and degradation of the paint binder over time. Good masonry paints include UV stabilisers.

Flexibility. Masonry expands and contracts slightly with temperature changes. A flexible paint film handles this without cracking. A brittle one doesn’t.

Biocide content. Given Irish dampness, algae and moss growth on exterior walls is a near-universal problem. Quality masonry paints include biocides that inhibit biological growth. Without this, you’ll be pressure washing green walls every other year.

Dulux Weathershield

Best all-rounder, most widely used by professionals in Ireland

Dulux Weathershield is probably the most widely used exterior masonry paint among professional painters in Ireland, and it earns that position. It offers excellent water resistance, good coverage, contains biocide for algae resistance, and comes in a vast range of colours including mixed-to-order options.

The Weathershield Smooth formulation is the standard go-to for most exterior masonry work in Co. Monaghan. The Weathershield Textured option adds a subtle surface texture that can help disguise slightly uneven render.

Dulux also produces Weathershield Max — a premium extension of the range claiming up to 15 years performance. In Irish conditions I’d treat that figure conservatively, but it does represent a step up in durability from standard Weathershield.

Coverage: Approximately 8-10m² per litre (smooth) Available at: Most builders’ merchants, larger hardware shops across Monaghan

Sandtex

Premium performance, particularly on problem walls

Sandtex is a specialist exterior paint brand with a strong reputation among professional painters. Their Smooth Masonry paint is highly regarded for durability and is particularly effective on older, more porous masonry — which makes it very relevant for older homes in Co. Monaghan.

Sandtex contains high levels of biocide and its formulation handles the wet-dry cycling of Irish weather very well. It’s typically a premium price point but the performance justifies it on houses that are exposed to the elements.

The Sandtex Stabilising Primer, used on chalky or powdery old masonry before repainting, is one of the best products of its type available in Ireland.

Best for: Older properties, exposed locations, walls with a history of paint adhesion problems

Johnstone’s Smooth Masonry

Strong trade option, good value

Johnstone’s is a brand more commonly encountered in the trade than on DIY shop shelves, but it’s well regarded among professional painters for exterior work. Their Smooth Masonry paint offers good durability and coverage at a competitive trade price, making it a sensible choice on larger jobs where cost management matters.

Crown Weathercoat

Accessible, reliable quality

Crown’s exterior range is widely available in Irish hardware shops and offers reliable quality at a mid-range price. Not the most premium option on the market, but significantly better than budget alternatives. A solid choice for a standard exterior repaint on a well-maintained surface.

What to Avoid

Budget and own-brand masonry paints — particularly those at the very low end of the price range — save money on paper but tend to have lower pigment loads, less durable binders, and minimal biocide. On an exposed Irish property, these can start to chalk, fade, and allow algae growth within 3-4 years. The saving on paint is quickly eroded by earlier repainting.

How Many Coats?

For most exterior repaints in good condition: two coats of finish. For bare masonry, previously unpainted surfaces, or very porous render: a stabilising primer or diluted first coat, followed by two finish coats. For major colour changes: consider a tinted primer to reduce the number of finish coats needed.

The preparation stage is as important as the product choice. Even the best masonry paint won’t perform well on a surface that hasn’t been properly cleaned and prepared. See our guide on how to prepare exterior walls before painting for the full process.
